Birmingham Trade Unions to celebrate the Battle of Saltley Gate this Friday

Friday 10th February 2012 will be the 40th anniversary of the ‘Battle of Saltley Gate’.
Birmingham Trades Council has organised a celebration rally at the site of the former Saltley Coking Works on Friday 10th February 2012 at 11am, the moment that the gates were shut.
Speakers at the rally include Arthur Scargill; Tony Burke, UNITE the Union Assistant General Secretary; Ken Capstick, former Yorkshire NUM leader. They will be joined by former engineering shop stewards who took part in the Battle of Saltley Gate. Banner Theatre will perform their song ‘close the gates’.

On 10th February 1972 30,000 Birmingham engineers struck to support 2,000 striking miners who were picketing Saltley Coking Works. Over 10,000 engineers marched to the gates and forced the police to close them. This was the turning point of the strike, which the miners then won within weeks.
