Paul Nowak, the TUC Assistant General Secretary, pictured, visited the midlands region on Friday 6th December calling to see both union officials and the reps at the sharp end of supporting members.
Paul started his visit by talking to UNISON officials at their Livery Street offices in Birmingham, raising issues of union membership and organisation and taking questions on facility time and access to training.
Paul then called in to talk to reps at West Midlands Police who had won a Midlands TUC Award for campaigning against privatisation and cuts in 2012, before moving on to hear evidence from Usdaw reps of just how hard it is to make ends meet - even when working for a retailer who is noted for paying some of the best wages in the retail sector.
Paul finished his tour with a visit to see Birmingham City Council leader Sir Albert Bore, learning first hand of his concerns for the future of local government and public services as successive waves of financial cuts hit home.
